The Illustrated Self - Word Map

What makes you the practitioner that you are?

A tough question.
There are many aspects of my personal and professional practice that are influenced by things around me to what I eat.
My work has developed as an illustrator throughout the past few years as I personally change myself and view the world differently.
My appearance has changed a lot since starting the course in September, for one, I'm bald.
As well as my diet changing, I went veggie in January and I am now eating a vegan diet which I am sure will have an impact on my work and the ideas behind them.
Coming from a small town with lots of greenery and old people, living in a city is a completely different world to me.
I have become a lot more aware of the people around me (more variations of people) and how people have a different sense of character.
Moving to the city and going vegan has allowed me to discover Pound Bakery veggie rolls which are a regular treat which could be a leading factor to the change of my work. Who said vegans are healthy?
Seeing variations of people around the city and in college has made me an even more ethical person which is a leading role in the concepts of my work. Feminism is a massive part of my life and being surrounded by women who agree makes me want to promote it even more.
As well as politics (with the general election coming up).

Word Map

I struggle when it comes to briefs that make me ask questions about myself because I see myself as an average person with no hobbies.

Making a list of things that I like, things that annoy me and music I enjoy seemed to be the only starting point.

Once I have a few words down I find it a lot easier to talk about myself and my interests.

As I continued the list I began to make my points deeper and stretch them out to small things that make me the person I am.

I began to notice links between the majority of words I had written.

  • Interests
  • Ambitions
  • Hobbies
  • Frustrations
  • Habits
These were the main aspects of the list that caught my attention. These are the most interesting elements of myself that make me who I am.

But do they inspire who I am as a practitioner?

The list still need narrowing down into more important aspects of myself as well as focusing on how my practice is influenced.
I used to think word maps were so ugly and confusing to look at.

My views have changed.

I have now realised I was an idiot. I can make clear links between aspects of myself and it encourages me to make as many points as possible.

I pointed out some of the main elements as well as different elements that influence my practice but the map still doesn't seem to connect enough.

How will this help my ideas for the poster design?
Ive narrowed it down more but I'm still unsure.

My personality and appearance seem to be the biggest aspects that affect me as a person as well when creating work.

There could be more links made from this.

Not everything has to connect.

How does my hard headed attitude come across in my image making?

I need to analyse this further.
I tried this idea again but this time making more points that relate to either personality or appearance instead of focusing on trying to link every single aspect.

Jeremy Deller inspired this idea by making as many possible points between acid house and brass bands and focusing on the connections after the points have been made.

I was still unsure about this idea and felt that it doesn't relate closely enough to my practice. However, the points about being liberal and opinionated are clearly seen in my practical work which could be visualised in my A2 poster.
