Study Task 6 - Interdisciplinary

Lisa Simpson

I feel like I can personally relate to Lisa out of the all the characters in The Simpsons as she is the most ethical and intelligent, yet she also has moments where she comes out of character and completely alters her style in an attempt to make herself seem cooler to the other kids, similar to me. (Although I’m now past the point of caring what I look like to other people). She is an independent young girl who is the most intelligent in her family, relating to me as both me and Lisa are well aware of the issues going on in the world and are both trying our best to prevent it from happening. She is constantly making an effort to make people more aware of these problems but people seem to simply ignore it or not have the capacity to take the information in and consider it. As well as all this she is vegetarian, which I was at the beginning of the year, however I am now aspiring and using my best efforts to convert to veganism. She inspires my work because I feel as if I can relate to her as a character on most levels. If I met an 8-year-old girl with a similar intelligence to Lisa Simpson, I would hope that I could teach her everything I know and help her in trying to make the world a better place. Lisa is a smart girl, she also has moments of change whether it is in her physical appearance or her thought process. This also relates back to me, she meets new people and she changes herself to fit in. Although, in the end she always comes back to her original, intelligent self when she realises she doesn’t need the approval of others to make her a better person. For a young girl, she has been through a lot of different stages of her life, definitely more than me.

Greasy, Old, Balding Men in Pubs

This second point might seem like a joke but there’s nothing that riles me up more than middle-aged/old men in pubs (especially Wetherspoons). When I’m at home in Sowerby Bridge I find myself with nothing else to do than go to the pub with my young, female friends. Wetherspoons is often the pub of choice simply because it’s cheap. However, it is always full of old men. These men to be sexist, racist, homophobic or just plain creepy. Surprisingly, this is a massive influence of my personal practice as it I am consistently making work that seems humorous but also has a more serious undertone. This has been mostly evidenced in my Context of Practice work where I focused on pornography and how women are objectified in the industry because of the male viewers. Arguments about these ethical subjects with old men in pubs leads to wider subjects like politics and feminism. I try to show this throughout a lot of my work with a lighthearted approach which is represented through the wonkiness and bright colours but a darker undertone lies in the message. My shaved head is also a huge deal for these men (as if they’ve never seen a woman with short hair before) which inspires me to influence more women to do things that these kinds of men will disagree with. This can be seen in one of my sticker designs from the Acts of Kindness brief. Personally, I think they’re masculinity is weakened because they don’t have a choice in their hairstyle.
